Youth Volunteers

The Saint Louis Science Center’s Youth Volunteer Program is designed to give teenagers, ages 13-18, meaningful experiences. Youth volunteers will work as valued staff throughout the museum. In order to increase his or her understanding of work-based skills, youth volunteers are constantly exposed to professional development opportunities that encourage workplace learning.  SCANS, which stand for the Department of Labor’s Secretary’s Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills, is a set of skills that are taught to Youth Volunteers through a combination of simulations and written work.  SCANS skills include:

  1. Communication strategies,
  2. Understanding workplace systems,
  3. Resource management,
  4. Information interpretation, and
  5. Increasing technological knowledge.
Youth Volunteers are given multiple opportunities to develop a personal comfort level with science through various activities and demonstrations which he or she then teaches to visitors.    For more information about the Youth Volunteer Program, please contact Lady Gywanna F. Volunteering at the Science Center is a rewarding experience.  The year-round volunteer program will begin October 2, 2010 and continue until April 30, 2010, and will only be on the weekends.  A volunteer experience would mean developing skills, career exploration, job experience, credit hours, challenging their abilities, learning science, developing new friendships, and having fun.
