This is the blog of the SCANS component of the YES Program. In 1990, the Secretary of Labor appointed a commission to determine the skills our young people need to succeed in the world of work. The commission's fundamental purpose was to encourage a high-performance economy characterized by high-skill, high-wage employment. The SCANS skills are the foundation of work-based training in the YES program.

College Prep and Scans
Submitted by Kimberly001 on Sat, 12/01/2007 - 12:20pm. College Prep | SCANS
over the past week we have been doing scans and college prep and they both help a lot. College Prep helps you get ready for the future and It helps you get prepared. In College prep we always do activities that well help us get ready for the future, for example getting a house, and how much that will cost and and it helps us know how much we need to save up. Last week we worked on scans. We made posters on what we would like to do in the future. I want to be a pharmacist. I had to look up information about my job and I find things that i had to accomplish to get there.

FOR EXAMPLE THE LAST SCAN WE DID, WE HAD TO RESEARCH A POSSIBLE OCCUPATION. I CHOSE A NEW'S ANCHOR. THIS JOB SEEMS FUN AND EXCITING TO TAKE ON. EVERYDAY YOU SEE THESE TYPES OF PEOPLE.

SCANS/College Prep

I think the most beneficial activity that we did in SCANS this semester was "Acquiring, Organizing & Communicating Information" activity. What we had to do is research our future occupation on Occupation Outlook Handbook. The things we had to find were:
Job Title
Job Description (types of nature of the work)
What working conditions can you expect once on the job?
What type of equipment, if any, is necessary for this job?
What kind of special training is required?
What kind of education is required?
Is experience required oe is on the job training available?
What are the oppportunities for advancement?
What is the estimated salary range?
What are the employment opportunities in this field?
What is the job outlook for the future in this chosen field?
Are there related occupations? Do they interest you?
