College Prep Role-Plays And Relaxes

College Prep | Staff

Juniors and Seniors role-played potential roommate conflicts this weekend during College Prep. The activity was designed to get teens thinking about living on a college campus and the different types of students one may encounter. Teens acted out scenarios with Popular Pat, Homesick Henry, and others!

Freshmen and Sophomores took a break from resume development to relax. Part of being a successful college student is knowing what stresses you out and how to handle that stress. The teens participated in stretching activities, progressive muscle relaxation, and guided meditation. These are just examples of emthods people can use to relax.

An Update From The College Prep Desk

College Prep | Staff

Welcome to another exciting entry from the College Prep desk. With the snow day and a field trip, it has been awhile since we've spoken. Lets get an update on what our teens are doing in College Prep right now!

Freshmen and Sophomores: We are almost completed with our resume workshop series, with all teens now having completed a rough draft of a resume. Teens have taken the time to list their Academic Honors and Extra-Curricular Activities and have translated that information into a resume. This past weekend, teens spent time peer-reviewing the resumes and made revisions to their original creations. These resumes will stay with the Freshmen and Sophomores to serve as an early draft of a resume for a future job or college application.

College Prep blog for Saturday 2.16

College Prep | Staff

This Saturday saw the continued efforts of staff to educate YES teens about preparing for life beyond high school. Freshmen and Sophomores worked on resume development. They viewed examples of good resumes, received ideas on how to construct their own resume, and created a rough draft of their first resume. Juniors role played a college admissions interview after updating their high school activities. Seniors spent time filling out college acceptance letters and took part in a financial aid exercise.

College Prep continues...

College Prep | Staff

This past weekend in College Prep was the continuation of the sessions from last time we met with teens. This time the College Prep group worked with those in Investigation Stations and Learning Places. The freshmen and sophomores interviewed each other and discussed work skills they may not have known they possessed. The juniors continued to examine colleges around the country, uncovering what is important to the juniors in a college. The seniors spent more time going over financing college.

Check back next week for more updates from a new 2-week session of College Prep!

College Prep updates!

College Prep | Staff

Just a quick update from the College Prep staff for this past weekend.

LaKisha and I worked with freshmen and sophomores spent time working on the first phase of Resume development, which was to interview each other and discuss skills they possess. After the interviews, teens thought about how those skills can translate into the workplace environment. For their next session, freshmen and sophomores will actually type out a resume! Here are some photos from their experience:

Juniors worked with Taylor to examine colleges and look at options for the future. Jessica worked with the seniors to discuss financial aid for college. Click here to view more photos from a great weekend!

Freshmen and Sophomores Create Colleges!

College Prep

For the past two weekends during College Prep time, Freshmen and Sophomores had the chance to finalize their designs for what their future college might look like. The purpose of this activity was to engage teens in thinking about what aspects of a college are important to them and design a college campus that meets those needs.

Working individually or in groups of two, teens created a college campus that addressed the following areas:

  1. Rural vs City based
  2. Large vs Small student population
  3. Athletic Emphasis
  4. Academic Emphasis
  5. Cost
  6. Administrative and Student Support Services
  7. Parking and Commuting Concerns
  8. Where Students Live (Dorms, Apartments, Off Campus)
