Summer 2012

It is hard to believe that summer break is coming to an end. This summer was many things--fun, challenging, at times, tiring, and by far one of the most memorable. Not only did I get the chance to meet some of the most genuine and caring people here at YES, but I was also able to befriend them and get to know them in depth. Through the past five weeks, my co-workers and I have developed a closeness that cannot be disrupted by the occasional disagreements and clashes in opinions; we have learned to work through it, to compromise, or even agree to disagree. Personally, I have learned so much through the program, especially from our supervisor and my co-workers who have taught me much more than what can be learned from a textbook. It has been an absolute pleasure working alongside my co-workers--friends,peers, confidants, brothers and sisters--overcoming challenges together, laughing together, playing together, and learning together. I will always cherish the memories of this summer at YES.

My Sweet Summer

My sweet summer was okay I didnt really do much though. The things I did this summer was , I went swimming,I went to sixflags. My summer was also boring at the same time cause I wanted to go out of town but I couldnt. Only because my mom had to go to summer school so we couldnt go. The only fun part about my summer was that I worked at the YES program with people I knew and people I didnt know. Overall I had fun this summer at some point of times.

Last Week

The time we all dreaded has come, no more checks, no more community groups-its the last week. I've had a lot of fun this summer, it was something new besides sitting in the house all summer. I found new interests in science and in life. My co-workers and I have made a bond so strong were like family now.Our supervisor has been very supportive and helpful with us on many different subjects. I've learned a lot about people and how we should be in a business environment.I feel like this program can change anybody good or bad by the end of the program you'll be very professional and ready to face the world. I can't wait till next summer.

The end .....

This summer was amazing! I had no idea that I would have this much fun doing science, because science is not my favorite subject. I literally hated science when I was in 8th grade even though that I had an A.I know that I have grown as a person in my experience at the science center. I know for sure that I will come back next year. I learned not only about science but I also learned how to grow out of my shell and make friends. This was the best, and thanks for everything.

New experiences (networking event/disecting)

Last week a big networking event was created and put together for us Y.E.S teens. I think it was very successful. Though at the time I went, there were no people there in my interest of work (medical field), but my eyes were opened to different careers I probably wouldn't have looked into so I'm thankful for that opportunity. Today my group Alive or not Alive which is apart of Summertime science partnered with Agriscience and dissected a shark. When I heard what we were going to be doing I was excited! But that's mostly because I want to become a surgeon and I will have to be doing that kind of stuff so I find it cool.

Networking Extravaganza

On Thursday, we went to a networking extravaganza here at the Taylor Building. At first I was scared to talk to the people, then I became more comfortable. It was a really good experience.
Today we went to the Agriscience room and dissected sharks. It was really cool and kind of creepy to see all of the shark's insides.

Job Fair/Shark Dissecting

Last Thursday at my job, we had a career fair. Different professionals came to visit and share their job experiences with the teens and staff members. It was a really good experience for me seeing that I will be attending college next fall. Today, my co-workers and I did a dissecting activity with another group. We dissected sharks and it was very interesting because I learned more about sharks. I really enjoyed it!

At the networking event we had many different entrepreneur's. We had a lot of interesting one's too, like a mortician, American Children Of Prison Parent's (ACOPP), a cemetery lady who does the paper for people who died in the war or air force, and this man name Kent who comes and investigate if a bridge or if there's a car accident. There was a lot of other one's but i didn't get to them in time.I really liked the mortician man because he showed us how they cleared the body out to get it ready for the funereal. overall I really liked it I hope we can do it again.

Last Thursday we had a netwotworking at work and I enjoyed it. I met plenty of nice people that have alot of connections with a variety of people.
The Networking Event

The networking event was awesome i meet so many people!! People who were so kind and generous with with knowledge and information. I found out about jobs i never knew excited advertisers the people who make commercials i thought the company's whose commercial it is made it not a guy behind a computer or storyboard. I found out what its like to be a cop and embalmer also a recruiter for a school. There was this guy who was in the navy who told me what his experience was and how much fun he had and the places he went and the things he did. For one he was on the ONLY navy ship with a radio station that he started!!! I think this networking event that we had has opened the YES teens eyes a lot to the world around us.

Networking Event :)

The Networking event was wonderful, I thought that it would be hard but it wasn't. I walked into theere nervous for I don't reason. I had all these thoughts going through my head like, what if I mess up or what if I forget to pronounce a word wrong? When i arrived there I met a woman who worked for Jefferson Barracks Cementery. She was very oputpsoken and friendly. She said whatever job you strive for, you will defintely get it if you work hard for it. She gave encouraging advice about jobs and careers in which will attend in the near future. I met a man who worked for ACOPP, this is an non-profit organization were they help young childrren and teens have an connection with their mother's and father's who are currently in prison or incaracerated. He said this organization was built for teens to build relationships with their parents because once they leave prison, they want them to already have an connection with them. Overall I learned alot about myslef, those around me, and mostly about the career that I want to persue in the near future. Im glad that I was given the oppurtnity to meet wsuch wonderful people like them. I enjoyed it alot :).

The Networking Event

I had a great time at the Networking Extravaganza. I met so many people who are very successful in their career field. There was a man from Wade Funeral Home who, in my opinion had the best presentation. I wasn't interested in cremation and the embalming til then. I kinda want to own my own funeral home when I become older. Also when I came into the event I expected a bunch of critics, but in reality everyone was there to help. I found new career interests and I mad wonderful connections, 'overall it was a great day.

6 Weeks Down, 2 More To Go...

We just finished our networking event and I have to say I am surprisingly pleased at the results. As a new YES intern, this was my first experience at this event and I enjoyed seeing the teens interact with the professionals and viceversa. There was a lot of positive energy and feedback from the YES teens in attendance. I was especially happy to see that most of my kids-9 out of 11-showed up to the event which was a better turnout than I expected!
Sadly, one of my teens, Seth Akakpo-Lado, decided that today was his last day. He was involved in several other organizations and wasn't able to divide his time equally. My group of teens will definitely miss his presence but we're happy for all the exciting things he has lined up. He let me know that the networking event and working with the kids of the community groups was his best and favorite part of the entire YES program. I wish all my teens could have attended the program today, but that comment definitely made my day and makes the whole summer worth it!

Summertime Science

Well this summer is doing good so far because I got a job and I'm being paid a nice of money. the one experience I liked the most was the senses testing. Did you know if you lose one sense, the others can become stronger? This summer job has helped prepare me for real life.
