This is the blog of the YES Parents as Partners program. In an effort to increase parent involvement in the Youth Exploring Science program, a parent advisory board was established in November of 2006. This program provides parents of YES teens with an opportunity to play an active role in the future goals and objectives of the YES program. Additionally, YES Parents as Partners provides parents with a forum where ideas, questions, concerns, and resources are exchanged.

Below, you can see some of the previous activities held in conjunction with YES Parents as Partners. We are looking to reboot with help from YES teen parent Regina Welsh as we enter Fall 2010. The first meeting of our new session is scheduled for Saturday, September 11, 2010 at 9:30a.m. Please plan to attend. Family Math and Science Night...Halloween Style!

Inviting Teens, Parents, Guardians, and Friends for this Semester's First Family Math and Science Night Tuesday, October 23rd from 6-7:30. We will have a variety of Halloween-themed activities for all ages, as well as yummy dinner and dessert cooked with love by one of our very own YES parents! Family Open House/College Fair

Please join us this Saturday from 12-3 at the Taylor Building for a dual Family Event sure to benefit everyone! From 12-1, families of YES teens and Youth Volunteers will have an opportunity to meet, mingle, tour, and receive valuable information regarding the youth opportunities here at the Taylor Building. Following the Open House, parents and teens are invited to participate in our College Fair from 1-3. Representatives from various colleges, universities, and banks will be available to address the many questions and concerns families have regarding "going to (and staying) in college."

Last Saturday proved to be, once again, a fantastic meeting for YPP. With each meeting comes a variety of fabulous ideas and initiatives that push the YES program to higher heights. This meeting, we discussed potential destinations for a Family Field Night this summer. Diane Miller, Senior VP of Education Programs and Partnerships and founder of YES described trips to the Muny and the Black Rep as "life changing experiences" for YES teens. We also covered the Personal and Professional Agenda YES teens will take part in this summer, as well as a potential Nutrition Workshop series for YES parents, including a cooking class and tour of Whole Foods! Details to come on all of the above. Want to become an active voice of the YES program? Come to our next YPP meeting Saturday, July 14th from 10-11:30am. All are welcome! Thanks to those parents who attended this Saturday. Without your voice, the YES program would surely remain a silent success rather than a loud celebration!

Family Science Nights are fun for everyone!

Last month's Famiy Science Night was rained out (April showers!); however, March's Family Science Night was a huge success, bringing YES teens and their families out for an evening filled with magical science fun! We explored John Zuman's fanstastic curriculum, MAGIC!. YES teens and families participated in a number of cool activities that explored the science behind those magic tricks we see in shows and on t.v. We are taking a break during May, but expect the next Family Science Night in June! Details are forthcoming! Hope to see you there (weather permitting, of course!).

Last Saturday YES held its first ever Parent Orientation. This event gave parents a chance to explore the Taylor Building (thanks to our very own YES teens who provided the tour), as well as an on-line tour of the YES program (thanks Cindy!). This was also a great opportunity for parents to meet one another, as well as YES staff. I want to thank the parents who attended the 4th YPP meeting this past Saturday. I am overwhelmed with the amount of thoughtfulness and support that YES parents demonstrate within these meetings. Some of the most fantastic ideas have sprung from these meetings, and I am convinced that without a parent advisory board and support from YES parents, the YES program would not reach the heights that it is reaching today.
