SciFest: International Science Festival

This week begins the annual presentation of SCIFEST: International Science Festival programming. For the third year in a row we've been asked to participate as presenters for Design Challenge. Staff have led school programming for over 300 students in two days! Tomorrow we wrap up with two more sessions where we'll be discussing the science principles behind roller coasters. Our first challenge is to have students build a "ski jump" where the marble must travel down the track and land in a can. Teams try to beat their distance before advancing to the next challenge. Over the last two years the distance to beat was 71 inches, but today a group completed a jump 84 inches away!

On Saturday YES teens will be attending a variety of sessions at Scifest where we'll be hearing about the science in everyday life. Scifest is open to the public so stop in Saturday or Sunday to learn more!

When the scientist came to visit they were veryn interseting. I learn alot. I learned wht they do, how they got there, and what inspired them to do wht they do today. They were very cool...One man had a math problem named after them, so i was thought that was cool....I had a really good time

Engineer's Week

The St. Louis Science Center's School and Community Partnership Department is hosting an Engineer's Week experience for St. Louis 5th to 9th graders during February 19-22, 2008, from 9 am til 11:30 am. We would like to invite you and your schools to participate with us during this national event. The timing will be appropriate as we celebrate National Engineers Week in general during this period. Furthermore, the weekend of February 23-24 will be highlighted by the annual Missouri Society of Professional Engineers (MSPE) sponsored exhibition at the Science Center.The event will be held at the Science Center's Taylor Community Science Resource Center, 4900 Manchester (SW corner of Manchester and Kingshighway). Below are the main goals of the event, and things we would love to have your students experience while joining us for the week.

Program Concept and Objectives

The overall objectives are to help students better understand and recognize the academic and career opportunities available within the various disciplines. The Engineer's Week program's goals are to:

1. Provide students with concrete experiences related specifically to engineering careers that might otherwise seem unrelated to their current academic studies and everyday experiences.

Family Science Nights are fun for everyone!

Last month's Famiy Science Night was rained out (April showers!); however, March's Family Science Night was a huge success, bringing YES teens and their families out for an evening filled with magical science fun! We explored John Zuman's fanstastic curriculum, MAGIC!. YES teens and families participated in a number of cool activities that explored the science behind those magic tricks we see in shows and on t.v. We are taking a break during May, but expect the next Family Science Night in June! Details are forthcoming! Hope to see you there (weather permitting, of course!).

YES teens work at Missouri Botanical Garden's Earth Day Celebration

City Science YES teens worked with over 75 kids and their families at the Missouri Botanical Garden's Earth Day celebration. Teens demonstrated wind power and solar power by making windmills and solar powered sketch robots with visitors. Teens explained to kids and their families how solar panels work and why they are better for the environment. It was a great way for teens to conclude this semester, and gave them a chance to disseminate their STEM knowledge to other youth! Way to go City Science YES teens!

Community Science Day

Community Science Day is happening once again this May to help connect St. Louis to science. On Saturday, May 12th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the main building of the Saint Louis Science Center will showcase some of the most interesting organizations from the St. Louis science and technology community. Performances, workshops, and hands-on activities will provide fun for all ages. Admission is free for all, and every community is welcome! Last Saturday YES held its first ever Parent Orientation. This event gave parents a chance to explore the Taylor Building (thanks to our very own YES teens who provided the tour), as well as an on-line tour of the YES program (thanks Cindy!). This was also a great opportunity for parents to meet one another, as well as YES staff. Although attendance was low, the parents who came to the orientation were eager to learn the "in's and out's" of the YES program. Thanks to all who helped put this event together.
