One of four main components of the Saint Louis Science Center’s YES program, City Science is a YOP tax credit program focusing on science within the context of urban environments. end of the summer

I really enjoyed spending my time with learning places this summer. I had a good time getting to know new teens and also new supervisors. I also had a really good time working with the kids at the different sites. also like how we worked together to succeed-through this summer. I had a great summer for myself also. I hope everybody had a great summer and hope next summer is even better!!!!!!!!!!!!

City Science Teens Present On Their Semester Projects

April 26th was the last weekend of Learning Labs for the spring 2008 semester and City Science teens spent the day finalizing their presentations on semester projects. Teens worked very hard to create poster presentations and interactive activities to demoonstrate what material they have spent the semester learning. Presentations were on topics such as the Caracal Cat, Lipids, Proteins, Sugars, Starches, other Food Nutrients, Food Borne Illnesses, Home Decor and Design, and the Candy Lab.

Today is the last day of the spring semester ... Oh my gosh this was a very good experience to be working in the lab with some people that I know and some people that I didin't know. I had a really good time doing experiments and working with new things. All of the things we did in the lab I will take with me in life and in the work field and I am really looking forward to seeing all my peers in summer

City Science Prepares To Present

Last week in City Science, teens worked in their groups to prepare presentations regarding their spring semester projects in the YES program. City Science A and B will present to each other during the last period of learning labs on April 26th. Teens will also lead the groups in activities related to their semester projects. City Science (B) Learns The Science Of Candy

Teens in the lab developed their own methods of creating candy during Learning Labs this past weekend. Rather than providing teens with directions and procedures, teens were divided into pairs and worked together to create Lollipops and Bubble Gum knowing only the ingredients to be used (and not proportions, amounts, etc). Teens used various creative methods to create their candy concoctions and worked as a group to determine the best way to develop their items. The groups really enjoyed the freedom to create their own flavors in their own manner.

Communication Skills

Today we did a activity called Telephone. It was hard to listen to someone and then tell the next person the same thing. We went over it almost five times. Then we got into groups of three and played it again and the strategy was to write our own message then switch messages with a different group and play telephone to see what happened. We had to know the order, and information of the message. This activity was hard because we all have different communication skills. This activity has a lot to do with my job because if my supervisor tells me a specific instruction to do and I forget the directions and i do it the wrong way something could go wrong just because i could not remember what i was told.

Today day we attemtped to created candy it was a pretty cool and sweet experiment in this lab there were no directions and or insrtuctions it was every group for itself we mixed all the ingrediants we were supplied with we used strawberry and peppermint for the bubbke gum and root beer and a sour flavor for the lollipops it was a bery tasty experiment.

We enjoyed doing the lab without following directions at first Lakeisha and Tim thought that we were so used to following directions that we could not not follow them but we ended up tricking them.

Today, we did different activities at different stations. We did this to help better ourselves with our investigations projects. I haven't been here in a while, so I have been missing out on what my group has been doing. I would like to know how far we are in our project and what is left that needs to be finished.

Making Candy

Today in our lab we made some candy. We made lollipop and some gum. We learned how to make bubble gum and lollipop by ourselves without our supervisor.We were supplied with the things to make it but we didnt get any help. Lance was the taste tester. Lance said everybody had some good candy.

Sick POP

Today we made gum and lollipops in lab. It was fun and exciting we finally made something edible. and we made a pop called sick, YEah. oUR SICK POP was sour and sweet. The best thing about the lab is that we got to make the pop scikle however we wanted to, we were just given materials.

Research on the Gateway Arch

This is Jasmine and in City Science A we are doing research for our projects. The research I am doing is on the Gateway Arch. All the people that are in my group is Adrian, Jamaal, Christina, Deveny, Daphney, and Anjanea. Adrian, Deveny, And Jamaal are building the model of the Arch while the rest of us make the poster. The model will be made of cans. Also on the poster board we will tell how the Arch was built, what it's made of, and what type of weather conditions the Arch can stand up against.
