Reading Food Labels

<p>Last Saturday, the teens in Atmospheric Science had a guest speaker.&nbsp; Linda from Mizzou&#39;s extension office came to talk to us about picking out healthy food.&nbsp; First, she explained how to read food labels.&nbsp; Then we visited a local store and tried to find healthier foods.&nbsp; At the end of the day, the afternoon teens were able to transplant some of our plants out onto Science Corner.&nbsp; Here&#39;s a photo of Linda explaining how to choose a fresh orange.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><div id="yui_3_7_3_3_1368560318836_1155" class="thumb"> <span class="photo_container pc_m"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/youthexploringscience/8738348797/in/photostream"><img id="yui_3_7_3_3_1368560318836_1152" class="pc_img" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7284/8738348797_06f291e595_m.jpg" border="0" alt="the store tour" width="240" height="180" /></a></span></div>

Today is our last day of the fall Session. This session period has for me been a great success. We learned a lot of things over this short , but useful period. Today we went to Manchester Market to experience the healthy techniques to find good fruit. I learned that these techniques look easy, but if picked wrong your fruit could possibly be rotten.

The Last Day

Today is the last day of the Fall session, and we went to Manchester Market to help with the St. Louis Healthy Corner Store Project. In Atmospheric Science, we are growing food to sell to Manchester Market, and going there today makes me think we have some real work to do with them. A woman named Linda came and helped us to see what was going on. Last week I wasn't here but they were at the main building. Over all, the Fall session was a good experience for me, and I would want to come back next year.

Atmospheric Science ( :

Today in Atmospheric Science we went over to Manchester Market with Keri and Glinda and we learned about what foods could be bad for you and what foods can be good for you . We also learned how to read food labels, how to pick out different foods like oranges, lettuce, and etc. Today is our last day over in the Taylor building , until June 10th because next week we will be over at the zoo all day ! I can't wait because I love the zoo. My time here in Atmospheric Science with Tim and Kerry was very fun. I learned lots of stuff. I learned about plants and planting an all sorts of things of that nature. Some of it was BORING , but some things I was really into and enjoyed !

Research Projects :)

My research project was over rats ability to adapt to their environment and also be able to get a task done. My project consisted of two rats and a kiddy pool. The question was how long it would take for the rat to find the platform in the middle of the pool. The rats were able to find the platform in less than 30 seconds. I was able to get my task done but it took some work, I had did over 4 different research projects before coming to this one. I was very frustrated at first because none of the experiments did not go well at first, but the rats liked the last experiment I did with them. I enjoyed this experiment and it was fun working with rats even though I was a little scared at first but for the most part I loved it lol :)

Today's the last day until summer. I'm really looking forward to growing fresh produce for the local market. Being a part of the St.Louis Corner Store Project seems like a very fun and great experience. Next week we are spending our last fall session at the Zoo. I'm really looking forward to the summer, I had a great experience in Atmospheric Science and continue to have many more during the summer.

Goodbye spring semester, hello summer!

Today is the last day that we'll actually be doing work for the spring. It's always sad to say goodbye, but I'm beyond excited for the summer program to begin! I really enjoyed the component I was placed in this semester, (atmospheric science) coming in I was overly confident that i knew everything related to this topic, but boy was I wrong! Hopefully i can be placed into something similar over the summer! To end this semester, were taking a trip to the Saint Louis Zoo (May 18th)...

Research Project

Today we worked on our research projects. my research project is an oreo cookie test. the point of the experiment is to see if people can differentiate between different types of oreo cookies only using their sense of taste and smell. we we're going to use two different types of oreo such as original and doubled stuff to see if there is really a difference in the taste among ages between 5 to 30 years old. we didn't get a chance to collect data on our projects but i feel it was going to be a very wonderful experiment.

Teaching Hardships and Triumphs

Teaching may look like its easy but believe me it is not! Well it depends on how you look at it because I truly am not the "let's scream at the top of our lungs to be heard" type it just isn't me, I'm more of the "let's be civil and talk face-to-face like we are actually belong to the human race" type. But it is very fun too learn something new and teach it to some one else that grasps the subject very nicely it make one proud like a mother bird seeing her runt of the little soar higher than its siblings.
On that note there is also a dark side to teaching kinda like the black sheep effect, its there but no one wants to talk about it. Everyone should know this side of teaching because everyone has taught weather you realize it or not. The dark side where you put so much effort into learning it and putting it together only for it to be unwanted and destroyed.
No matter where you end up today on the good-side, the bad-side, the pretty or the ugly, there's always a way to make a difference tomorrow.

The Hardest Part of Teaching Science

I would have to say the hardest part of teaching science would be making up activities for the students to understand. Making up activities and games in general can be a hard task but making it related to science, makes it even more complicated. Once you actually accomplish it, you feel relieved because you were able to do it.
