Y.E.S

YES

This summer I am working at Dr. Katie Harper Wright Elementary School in East St. Louis. The students are fun to work with and energetic. They even get excited when we play icebreakers! One particular activity we did with them was a grass seed experiment. We gave them two film canisters- one was the control and the other was their very own experiment. With the "variable" canister the students chose to either take away or add something to it. One student decided to use more soil and his grass seeds grew taller than he predicted. A few of them said that they would try their experiment at home which was a good thing because we want to teach them that science doesn't have to stay in the classroom.

On Wednesday I went to Botanical Garden with Kerry, Mr. Orville and a few other Y.E.S teens. We went to hear a lecture  about climate change. I learned that there isn't one main reason why global warming is occuring.  Last Saturday I took pictures of my group disecting sharks.

One topic that I am interested in is climate change. " Most scientists agree the main cause of the current global warming trend is human expansion of the "greenhouse effect"-- warming that results when the atmosphere heat radiating from Earth towards space" said Nasa.com. Global warming is the most prominent reason for climate change. "Global warming refers to an average increase in the Earth's temperature, which in turn changes in climate," said Globalchange.com.

Science After School

YES
Today in Science After School we did an experiment with worms. We observed them and recorded any data. We put them on moist paper towels and watched their behavior. We timed how long it would take the worm to travel three inches. We added three more inches every trial and recorded the results. Our worm wasn't cooperating at all.

In Science After School we will be doing science and math in after school programs in the community. We are currently doing activities dealing with chromatography. Very interesting.

My Experience As A Y.E.S Teen

Summertime Science

My experience as a Y.E.S teen has been fun and challenging. Teaching the autistic children was challenging for me because I've never worked with children with disabilities. They were fun to work with and i think that they had a good time doing the activities with us. I dont have anything else to say except that the kids had fun and I did too so that's all that matters.
