Submitted by Nichole001 on Thu, 05/31/2012 - 3:13pm. Compton DrewHi SLSC readers! My name is Nichole, if you don't know. I am now 21 years old and a senior in college. I'm back working for the YES program once again. This is now my third summer being a supervisor. I am excited to be doing something new and different with the teens this year. I have been informed that this summer I will be working with some of the older teens. This should be a new learning experience. We are only on day #3 of our training so far, so i'm eager to see what the summer has to offer.

Today at Adams we taught optics again. Todays theme was Shadows. Toay we had the kids go outside and measure how tall they are, and measure how long their shadow was and compare the two measurements. The kids seem to enjoy the first activity. The next investigation we did they were back inside. They we given a clear object and a solid object. They were to use a flashlight to make a shadow for both object and write down the differences.
Botany, Optics, & Sand
Submitted by Nichole001 on Wed, 07/02/2008 - 9:11am. Learning Places
This week so far learning places have been coming up with different investigations for the groups we have to teach. This summer is different from any summer i have been here so far. Instead of teaching the same thing to all of our sites, we have three different themes to teach (Botany, Optics, & Sand). Two of our sites have optics, two have botany, and one has sand. On Monday we went to Adams where we teach optics. The investigations went well this week. On Tuesday Learning Places split up. The majority of teens went to Headstart to teach sand investigation. Five of us went to Christian Services to teach Botany. Today we go to Girls Inc. to teach optics hope we have a successful day.

Today is our fifth day back and i am glad to be here. During this first week back we have been starting to work on the skills we need to be successful this summer. This summer all of our activities and curriculum will inquiry based. We have to make everything we do interesting enough for our kids to want to learn more about it themselves. We have two new supervisors this summer, Tim and Bill. Im sure they will make this summer fun as well.

Its Been a Long Time Coming.......
Submitted by Nichole001 on Sat, 04/26/2008 - 10:05am. YES
I have been in Learnng places for almost three years now. This semester in Learning places has been better than i thought it would be. Coming into the fall/spring semester i had my doubts about if it would be fun or boring. I was concerned about all the supervisor changes that our group has been going through, and i wondered if they could fill Gywanna's spot. I have come to like all three of our supervisors.
Our new supervisors have made this semester very fun and interesting for us. We have done some things i didnt think we would do like make glass jewlery or and have very interesting people come in to talk to us about alot of things. I think that they try to keep us entertained. We learned about inquiry and teamwork alot because that is what our group needs to know to have a successful summer.
At the beginning we were put into groups and assigned one of our community organizations. Our task was to design the space we were given by that organization to fit a science theme that we picked. i was put into the Christian Services group with Ariel. First we sat down and decieded what we wanted the room to look like and what we wanted in it. We had to draw what we want each wall to look like and present to Christian services. They loved it so we were happy. We went to Home Depot and picked out colors and building material. Im excited to see what the final result is.
