Working with the Katy Harper Wright children has been great! About a week ago we let the children create their very own experiment using grass seeds and 2 film canisters. the first film canister was their "control" while the second one was their "experimental" or what they compared the control to. We allowed them to change any variables they wanted. For example, one student thought that the amout of water was what affected plant growth rather than the amount of soil. This student added the desired amount of water and soil to his canisters. Each student also made a hypothesis in their field journals. Each day the children can't wait to water and care for their canisters. This activity is very beneficial because not only does it involve plant science but also the scientific method.
