Learning Places

      Hey everyone!! . . . .

Today, during our learning lab sesssion, we split into groups and did several activities. The most memorable was an activity similiar to that of the "childs game" telephone. Everyone in the group, accept for the storyteller and the lister, left the room. While the other group members were outside a rather lenghthy lol story was told. Once the story was completely told, the listener then had to tell the same story to another group member. By the time all the group members told the story, many important details were left out/twisted around etc . . This activity was supposed to show us(yes teens) the importance of active listening and note taking. It ddid just that. I liked it . . . . . :^)

Hey Colin,

You are in fact a great communicator, which is probably why you are a communication specialist. Part of being able to communicate well is the ability to listen attentively. As a communication specialist, you will have to extract what you are told and make it into a story of your own and tailor it to your audience from the kids to the community partners, and supervisors. I hope this role will give you a good challenge in extending your communication skills to another level of detail and precision. If this role is not challenging you in the right way, please let us know. Good work so far!

 Hi Colin,

It was a pleasure having you work with the communications specialists on Saturday.  Thank you for writing such a detailed description of our activity.  Reading a blog like this is informative and interesting!  I am really glad that the activity was able to demonstrate the importance of active listening and notetaking for you.

The note taking and documenting skills will be very important for your role as a Community Liason too.  You will need to track everything that gets discussed with our community partners since the Communications Specialists won't be with you observing meetings or listening to calls.  As the activity demonstrated when we don't write down the critical details they get lost, and sometimes new (false) details get invented!  You can prevent misunderstanding by keeping a careful log of your convesations and activities as a Community Liason!

Keep up the great work Colin!

Leah

p.s. can I read the email you wrote to the community sites?

Colin,

Thank you for taking the time to write a detailed blog about this activity.  I have a real understanding of what you were doing in your group and why.  I'm glad that you had another chance to work with Lorien and learn from her.

Hi Colin - thanks for telling everyone about the gossip / telephone tag activity we played during your role group time last week. I am especially glad that remembered the purpose for the activity...I hope it inspires you to take good notes at all of your future meetings! I had such fun at Learning Places last Saturday! I'll be back in December and I'll be reading blogs between now and then so keep writing about all the great stuff you're doing! - Lorien (guest facilitator from last Saturday)
