Today, i did research on what im going to write about next. I will explain with reliable sources, how GPS works and how onstar works. Most people think that if you get a GPS reciever, that since you can see your location, you can also be tracked down from satellite. But that is not true, GPS recievers only work passively and do not send out information but only recieve it. therefore if someone steals your GPS you wont be able to track it. OnStar has both GPS and Cellular Communication. The GPS gets the location of the car, then uses cellular communications to send the location to the company. More will be explained when i post an article out soon on scijourner.org

Today at SciJourn

SciJourn
Today was a rough start for me. I was tired since i slept late, i work up a little late, took a shower then put on my Yes shirt and came to the Taylor Building 15 mins late. I realized i forgot my bookbag with all my stuff at home along with my belt. Then we had to look at articles with a partner and do a activity where we think of a followup on the article but make it about science. I worked with Damonte and we read an article on Mark McGuire and if he will get accepted to the hall of fame since he admitted to using steroids. We thought up of the idea of a followup that explains how HGH works and Anabolic Steroids affect your body, since Mark McGuire only claimed he used them to help his muscles recover from injuries.

Articles and Videos

SciJourn
Today Doug King came to talk to the SciJourn group. He told us some of his career and mostly about the science center and how its been almost 25 years since it has opened. He mentioned some really interesting history i didn't know, like the fact that the planetarium was made to get people interested in space during the time when Russians had reached space before everyone. Later on we had to pitch ideas to the group. I didn't pitch since my idea wasn't very well put together, and i didnt want to look unorganized in front of the President of the Science Center. I didnt realize how hard it is to find a good topic to make a good video or article. It has to have some science perspective, it would help to make the subject on something current, it would help to have someone to interview or a primary source to reference, it would need reliable background information, and more. Korry and I wanted to do one about dreams, sleep, and how it works in the brain. I did some research and i found out i could relate it to science by making it about brain activity while sleeping. I found little background information that is legitimate on the internet. I do not know if i can interview anyone about this subject or really even find a primary source to reference in the video.

Today at Girls Inc.

Learning Places
Today at Girls inc. we started out with an activity that shows if you are colorblind or not. My girl saw all the numbers which mean that she passed the test and is not colorblind. I think that activity was not really a good one because to fully understand why colorblind people cannot see those numbers it would be too difficult for them. After that we did an activity where you cut out a circle and color both sides. We were originaly suppose to draw a cloud on one side and a lightning bolt on the other side. But my girl didnt want to do that so i let her draw what she wanted. After you drew it on the circle we tied string on opposite sides of the circle. Then we winded up the circle and let it spin. What was suppose to happen is that the 2 sides will look like they are both on the same picture. It worked sometimes if you spinned it fast enough.

Today At Christian Services

Learning Places
Today at Christian Services we had the kids that we started out with in the first place. It took them a while to settle down because the group before them took them to the park. So after they settled we split them up, 4 in a room with me and Natalie. The two girls would argue with each other. The one boy would talk and not listen and sing and rap. But the other boy actually was quiet. We started on the bean activity where they were given ziplock bags and paper towels to soak and to put in the bags. After that they put seeds in the bags to grow. After that we talked about seeds, and seeds that you can eat.

Today At Adams

Learning Places
Today I came in late just as the Van was about to leave for Adams. I woke up late and it was all my fault but I wont make that mistake again. Ill come on time for the rest of the summer. But anyways Today I went at Adams not knowing what we will do but it turned out just fine. First we started off with an optical illusion form a printed out piece of paper. They wrote down what they observed and what happened in the optical illusion. Later, after the optical illusion, we went outside and measured the childrens' height. After that they traced their shadow with a piece of chalk and measured their shadows. They wrote down what they observed and saw that their shadows were sorter than them and came to the conclusion, with our help, that the suns position in the sky has a lot to do with it. After that we came back inside and did an activity on transparent items and solid colored items. That activity showed them that light goes through transparent items and doesnt go through solid colored object. Overall I think that they enjoyed and learned what we taught them today.
