Super Earth

Today in Astronomy we had a guest speaker, Mr. Rich Heuermann, talk to us about how to tell if the little stars we see are planets or if they are really stars. I was really interesting. I enjoyed it a lot. I really can't want until April when we get our own telescopes, and go star gazing.

Pretty much all we did today was practice the activities that we are going to be doing with visitors next at the Minority Science Showcase. Some of the activities that we will be doing and discussing are a pocket solar system, alien eyes, periscopes, and a pencil in water.
Today was fun.!

Today in Astronomy, we started out by doing our normal journal, word of the day, and fact of the day. Then we proceeded outside and measured the angle of the sun with our own homemade sextants. After that, we came back inside and talked about telescopes and actually got to made our own. After a very needed break we all came back and researched myth's about constellations.

Hubble.!!!
Submitted by Kathryn001 on Sat, 12/03/2011 - 4:20pm. Astronomy
Today in we learned a little about the Hubble. We also got to go in "space" and repair our own. It was very interesting and involved very good communication skills. After that we talked about reflector and refraction. Tying in with the Hubble we watched a video about the different lenses that are on the Hubble and how they work.

Man Made Noises Killing Dolphins
Ships and man made devices are reducing and endangering the habitat for whales and other sea animals. Because of the oil and exploration of the deep blue sea where loud noises are traveling it is harming the environment and home for the animals that live in that certain area. The noises aren’t just from the oil an exploration, it can also come from the propellers of a ship or the motor, the whole problem is the fact that these things are causing low seismic sounds, that can block the communication of whales. According, to ScientificAmerican.com and Chris Clark , director Cornell University Bioacoustics Research Program, “In Cape Cod Bay, man-made noise has reduced right whales' acoustic habitat by as much as 80 percent.” Scientist who have looked into the problem have created graphic animations that can display auditory habitats experience by the whales.

Today was a good day. We taught the kids about seashells and let them sort seashells into groups based on size and color. After that, we talked about sea otters and what they eat. Then, they were able to make their own sea otter puppet. I think that they really enjoyed that activity.
