Nutritional value and health benefits of Yogurt

Yogurt is nutritionally rich in protein, calcium, and riboflavin, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 It has nutritional benefits beyond those of milk. People who are moderately lactose-intolerant can consume yogurt without ill effects, because much of the lactose in the milk precursor is converted to lactic acid by the bacterial culture. Yogurt containing live cultures is sometimes used in an attempt to prevent antibiotic-associated diarrhea

Yogurt contains varying amounts of fat. There is non-fat (0% fat), low-fat (usually 2% fat) and plain or whole milk yogurt (4% fat). A study published in the International Journal of Obesity January 11, 2005, found that the consumption of low-fat yogurt can promote weight loss, especially due to the calcium in the yogurt.

Why Should You Volunteer....

Volunteering brings together a diverse range of people from all backgrounds and walks of life. Both the recipients of your volunteer efforts and your co-workers can be a rich source of inspiration and an excellent way to develop your interpersonal skills. Volunteering also offers an incredible networking opportunity. Not only will you develop lasting personal and professional relationships but it is also a great way to learn about people from all walks of life, different environments, and new industries. Networking is an exciting benefit of volunteering and you can never tell who you will meet or what new information you will learn and what impact this could have on your life. People pay attention to your life outside the environment in which they have direct contact with you. For example, your employer would be interested in the activities that gives you a good work-life balance, just as academic institutions are interested in your extra-curricular activities. Volunteering reflects and supports a complete picture of you, and gives real examples of your commitment, dedication and interests. Show people what you are passionate about and maybe you will inspire them too!

10 Important Question

Since it will be your teenager that is attending college, the first ten important questions to ask will be to him/her. Keep this question and answer session conversational and light, but let him/her know that the answers are important and he/she has time to think about it. Actually, the best time to have this conversation is when your teenager is just starting High School, so that he/she can have years to form their answers.

Why do you want to go to college?

Do you want to go to school for two years or four years?

What do you want to be? What job do you want to have?

What majors are you considering? How will this major get you to what you want to be?

Are there other careers you have considered?

What high school grades will you need to get into college? Do you have a plan on how to obtain those grades?

What high school classes will you need to go to college? Does your high school have those?

Have you considered the cost of college? Have you considered how we are going to pay for it?

Do you want to live at school or do you want to live at home?

What do you want the school to offer besides your major? What extracurricular activities are you interested in?

Blogging Tips......

We all know a teenager or two who blogs and maybe even vlogs (video blogging) because online journals are great ways for teens and kids to engage in self-expression. There are many positive benefits of blogging which include identity building, improved writing and communication skills, and more.

Over half of all blogs on the Internet are written by kids under the age of 19. Some teens have a tendency to overshare on their blogs, and a surprising amount of parents are unaware that their child is blogging at all. Here are some quick tips to help kids (and their parents) stay safe while blogging.

Protect your blog from being hacked. Use a complicated password including both letters and numbers. Make sure it is at least 6 characters long.

Use your “street smarts.” Avoid giving out any personal information like names, addresses, school names, birthdays, etc. Remember that any content you post could pop up on an Internet search engine, and divulging personal facts could put you at risk for becoming a victim of cyberstalking or physical stalking.

Why Debate?

Debating In Plant Biochemistry?

Debating creates the skills you need for success. Studies show that employers are looking for people with oral communication skills, and debate helps develop these. Studies also show that those with good oral communication skills are identified as “leaders” and get promoted faster on the job. Debating will help you succeed wherever your life may lead. We are constantly engaged in a struggle to improve our lives and those of the people around us. Through debate your voice can be a powerful instrument for change—in your community, in your nation, in your world, and in the future

Natural Tree vs Artificial Tree

The debate about the environmental impact of artificial trees is ongoing. Generally, natural tree growers contend that artificial trees are more environmentally harmful than their natural counterpart. On the other side of the debate, trade groups such as the American Chirstmas Tree Association, continue to refute that artificial trees are more harmful to the environment and maintain that the PVC used in Christmas trees has excellent recyclable properties.

Natural Christmas trees on the other hand are entirely biodegradable and are generally disposed of in landfills. Real or cut trees are used only for a short time, but can be recycled and used as mulch or used to prevent erosion. Real trees are carbon-neutral, they emit no more carbon dioxide by being cut down and disposed

A professional study on the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of both real and fake Christmas trees revealed that one must use its artificial Christmas tree at least 20 years to leave an environmental footprint as small as the natural Christmas tree.

Spider Mites

Plant Biochemistry has the task to find out and take out the famous SPIDER MITES!!!!

So with a litte research I found out that spider mites dislike humidity so misting the plant regularly may slow their reproductive rate. Adding a little insecticidal soap and methylated spirits to the water in our mister will also aid in the battle against this most persistent pest. Making sure to remove the webs and the spider mites by washing the plant in soapy water, paying particular attention to the underside of all the leaves. For tough plants, a forceful jet of water can be used, maybe that's something we can do once it get a little warmer. Lynette discovered that washing will not always remove all the eggs so repeating the treatment every 3 to 4 days until the plant is clear to ensure its success. For severe infestations which we have, spraying the plant with acephate or hexakis may be of some help but in order to prevent the contamination of any other plants, it may be best simply to destroy the plant. (Sad face)

I came to the States in August and live since than in Kirkwood, MO. I also go to Kirkwood High School. My experience here in the States has been many-sided and I am glad to see what and to live the American dream and the American way of life, even though the food is too good for me. I have been to some states, like Oklahoma, Ohio and Illinois and was very excited to see people thinking and living a little different from state to state.I am senior in Kirkwood High School and still surprised by the school spirit and the many different course selections,...My exchange program requires me to have at least 16 hours of community service for the time period of 10 months. Once I was visiting the website of the Saint Louis Science Center, I saw the advertisement for Body World's 3 and was really excited about it because I am really interested in medicine and the human body. I thought automatically about doing my volunteer hours at the Science Center and found the volunteer section on the homepage. It was talking about volunteer possibilities at Body World's and many other interesting and educating opportunities so that I decided to participate at the Youth Volunteer Program. I met Lady Gywanna Jackson first through emails and she seemed to be a very caring person. "What a nice start", I thought.
Now, after 4 sessions of training I am really glad to be a volunteer at the SLSC and hope to have more opportunities and chances to give my good experiences back to other people.
