Today we listened to the principal of Compton Drew, Susan Reid. She gave us a description of the building and set up the rules for us. After setting up the rules she established her expectations for us. They weren't high expectations but ones that I know we can accomplish. Her presentation was positive and she welcomed us into the Compton Drew family with a smile on her face. After the presentation made by Susan Reid Lady Gywanna had us go over the rules and expectations/guidelines for the summer teens. We ran into a little road bump when it came to the rule of staying in uniform. Some of the supervisors felt that we should highlight that the teens shouldn't sag but others felt that it would have no purpose because it's essentially part of being in uniform and the teens should know it already. After about 20-30 of debating we all agreed that we wont highlight it. After coming back from break Heather told everyone where they will be working and we split up into our groups by components. He broke up into our components and where told exactly what we will be doing in our groups this summer. We went through the guide made for us by Tim page by page and he answered all of our questions that we had. I feel so much better about Monday after today. I'm ready for the summer and to be the best supervisor.

Today we heard from the students of the NOSA organization. It was a great experience. They had a slideshow that explained what their organization was about. They showed us how they have fundraisers and different events in their community. The slideshow also showed their networking experiences. After the slideshow they let us play around with their equipment and ask question. The students were cool and I liked their presentation.

Today was a good day. In college prep we talked with Diane about the changes made in the Y.E.S. program. She asked us how we felt about it all and we told her. After speaking with Diane we went into our components. My component is Design It. In my component we are making ovens out of materials you can find at home. We used cardboard boxes for the actual oven. You start off by cutting the flaps off the top of the box. Then you cut a door and a window into the box leaving their flaps connected to them. After that you cut a hole in the front of the box for the light bulb. Now you make a top for the box. When you’re done making the top you must insulate the box so that the heat won’t be able to escape. You’re going to need all the heat you can get if you want the oven to get hot enough to actually cook something. Place the light bulb into the oven and plug it into an extension card. That’s as far as my group got today. I’ll tell you the rest next time I’m back on. Have a great week. This is Aaron and I’m out.

It's been a week since chaos and i don't believe it but the supervisors are actually listening to us a little. It feels like they are really hearing what we're saying instead of brushing it off. They're talking with us and helping us too. I also feel that the teens are starting to work a little harder but they need to keep workin on it. There hasn't been any arguements lately either. Now we're working on our long term projects. These are projects that will last for the rest of the summer & maybe even next year. The supervisors are helping us with them which is cool. Some of the other teens and I came up with the idea of building a life sized car made out of wood. It's gonna take us a while to make it but we'll get there in time.

That's it for me so DUCES

Hope u havin fun down there Felix.

I think everyone had a good time today. The subject for today was optics. We did a investigation with our shadows. Where we saw how our shadow height was different from our real hieght. The we went back to the taylor building. WAZUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUP FELIX. HOW IS HAWAII FOR YA HOMEY. WE MISSING U UP HERE IN ST. LOUIS IT JUST ISN'T THE SAME WITHOUT U DUDE.
Chaos in Learning Places

Man it's been crazy these last three weeks. Everybody's doing something wrong. The teens are getting into it with the supervisors & each other. See we feel that the supervisors aren't listening to us when we talk to them. They say they are listening but i think they listen but then later forget what we say like it isn't important. We've done all sorts of things to become a better group. It's like this when we go over the investigations for the sites sometimes they don't go with the kids at the sites and we try to explain to them that it's not going to work but they don't listen sometimes. On the other hand the supervisors feel that some of us aren't working. So now they're trying to give us things to do. I agree that sometimes some of us don't work when we are supposed to. I think that if the supervisors start listening to the teens they'll start working harder but if they don't start soon this will be a long boring & horrible summer for everyone.

Just to let everyone know, this doesn't affect our work at the sites. We still go hard and do what we're supposed to with the kids.

I hope that next week is a lot better

We met up with Kit and she told us what she'll be doing this summer with us. The supervisors told the new teens about the grant. And thats about it for this week.

Peace out

Semester Blog

This semester was great. I've learned a lot from the experiences we've had. The things I've learned can help me to be a better employee. During this semester I was able to form a better relationship with my employees. I learned things that could make me a better person also. Some of the experiences we had can also help me to reach my goal of becoming an architect, like talking with Joe Burzinski and doing the presentation for my site at Ranken Technical college. These experiences have helped me to better appreciate science because I'm not a big fan of it, but being here has changed my view of science a lot.

I've met all kinds of different people like the teens from the science museum in New Mexico and the teens from the science museum of Minnesota. We've done little workshops every other Saturday called college prep that basically prepare us for college. In college prep we do activities that our supervisors think will help us choose a good college and get into it. The people who came here this semester have been great also. We had an architect named Joe Burinski talk to us about the structure of different buildings. We had a lady named Ellen Rubin who was blind, but that didn't stop her from learning. She talk to us about disabled inventors. Then she showed us how she makes it through the day. After that she talked about sand. That Saturday with her showed me that if a women who is blind works hard to continue to learn more about science than just giving up, science is something I want to continue to work with. This semester we had a glass maker visit us. His name was Rich Brooks. He showed us how they cut glass and how to make jewelry.

Today we did college prep. In college prep we redid our resumes. Then we had a visitor who came to talk to us about glass. He was an artist. His name was Rich Brooks. He showed us a couple of pieces of jewlerey he made. Then he showed us how to make our own piece of jewlerey. We started but didn't get to finish. He told us how glass is made from sand. And how easy it is to cut glass. H e also said that some glasses are called cold glass and others are called hot glass. When he left we did an activity that dealt with digging. We were to pretend to be csi agents looking for evidence of a murder. After we found the evidence we had to put together a story of what happened. It was cool until Messa and Felix lied to us about having their own stories. Later after the activity we went over what we liked about the botany and the sand activities we have been doing. Then we did the daily assesment. Everyone was in the green today. I think that, that's where we should be, because everyone was on task and we didn't have any arguements today either. After the assesment we went to the computer lab and blogged.

Have a cool weekend

& peace out

3-8-08

Today we started off typing our blog from last week (which was not completed). After blogging, we did our inquiry activity, and in this activity we were given a piece of paper with a picture of a plant on it and we have to guess the parts of the plant. After that, we were given the answers to confirm our guesses. Next, we went over the parts of the plant with Leah and Felix, learning and comprehending their functions. Next, we did our second activity, in which we were given a plant to observe. We then proceeded to write things of interest on a piece of paper. Then we were to make our own inquiry about one of the questions presented. After this activity, we did scans and in this scan we were working on our listening skills. The activity we did with this scan included an opening in which we were to discuss for a short period of time. Some of the YES teens expressed their emotions, allowing us to learn more about each other. Our third activity was when everyone added one word to a sentence to teach us language skills.

  Have a nice day everybody.
Today we had a guest. Our guest was Ellen Rubin. When she first got here we went over scientist how had disabilities. She would hold up the name and we would say what we knew about them. After that we did this activity with sand where we filled a container with sand, put a brick in the middle of the container, and hit it with a hammer. We were to see what would the brick do after we hit it for awhile. Then we put water in the container and did the activity over. After we were done with the activity we asked Ellen questions.

2-16-08 The crazy day in learning places

Today in learning places we did went over the evolution of plants & flowers. Leah told us all she knew about plants & their evolution after we tried to guess first. Then we did the evolutionary challenge. In this challenge we first drew plants from our imagination that would be able to fit the characteristics we came up with. My plant was called the golden thorn sun plant. It had golden thorns that protected it from danger. It also had large leaves that collected water for it and had leaves at the top with seeds on them so that the wind can scatter them around the area. After we were done drawing them we went and got materials to make our plants or flowers. After we made them we presented them and said how they fit each characteristic we came up with. Later we did a quick written assessment on plant types. When we were finished with that we did our scans which was called the moderate challenge. In this challenge we had to balance our group of three on different size surfaces. In my group was Desmond, Nichole, & me. We were able to balance on each surface like no other group cuase we were the best. After that we did the daily assessment scale. We got in the green area. Then we blogged which is where I am now. Well that is all for now so peace out and have a nice week.

Today we got our act together. We first went over our agenda then we did an activity where we read a paper on inquiry. After that we had to do a posterboard on it and rewrite it in our own words. Later after we were done we listened to Leah's teacher who talked about ways of communicating with each other and the kids we are going to be working with during the summer. After that we broke up into our site groups and worked on getting measurememts and paints and other things we were going to need for our learning places. After that we cleaned up and then we blogged. So thats it and im out so peace.

Today was kinda okay. We started off working good with our scans were we went online to find our strengths. After that we went back to the class then we did an activity. The activity was hard because no one knew what they were supposed to do. We later discussed the activity in a big group. It became chaos because half the class was paying attention and the other half were just playing around. We stopped everything and had a group discussion about how we would continue. Everyone decided to stay so we then talked about why everything went wrong. After that we all said what we thought we should change to become better. Everyone was focused once again and the world was at peace so we ended the day and went and blogged. After all of that I felt that today we accomplished a lot. That's what happened today in the LP. Everyone have a nice day and peace out.
