Things are progressing for City Science "A" teens. Last week they narrowed down their investigatable questions and e-mailed them to Saint Louis Public Library's MyTracs Teens, who are going to assist City Science "A" teens with research through a Wiki they have developed. This is a wonderful opportunity for both cohorts of teens to collaborate and apply shared information to their respective projects. Stay tuned to hear updates from City Science "A" teens!

I owe an apology to Matt, who came in this summer as a new YES teen and rocked the house with his fantastic science and leadership skills. I forgot to give props to him in my last blog...definately an oversight and not purposeful. Once again, I feel so honored to have worked with you guys, even though it was cut short. GREAT WORK! See you this fall!

Responding to Adams 4th grade crew

It has been really exciting to watch the positive changes and growth among the YES teens teaching 4th grade at Adams Elementary. In the beginning of the summer I had a group of teens who were quiet and unsure of what was to come, but yesterday what I witnessed was far from where my teens began. Yesterday I had teens supporting one another, pushing their individual groups to learn and challenge themselves, and providing an enriching, positive learning experience for their 4th grade students. True leaders have emerged, and I want Silvester, Niki, Jay, and Christina to know how impressed and truly proud I am of them.

YES Parents as Partners gaining momentum!

Last Saturday proved to be, once again, a fantastic meeting for YPP. With each meeting comes a variety of fabulous ideas and initiatives that push the YES program to higher heights. This meeting, we discussed potential destinations for a Family Field Night this summer. Diane Miller, Senior VP of Education Programs and Partnerships and founder of YES described trips to the Muny and the Black Rep as "life changing experiences" for YES teens. We also covered the Personal and Professional Agenda YES teens will take part in this summer, as well as a potential Nutrition Workshop series for YES parents, including a cooking class and tour of Whole Foods! Details to come on all of the above. Want to become an active voice of the YES program? Come to our next YPP meeting Saturday, July 14th from 10-11:30am. All are welcome! Thanks to those parents who attended this Saturday. Without your voice, the YES program would surely remain a silent success rather than a loud celebration!

Family Science Nights are fun for everyone!

Last month's Famiy Science Night was rained out (April showers!); however, March's Family Science Night was a huge success, bringing YES teens and their families out for an evening filled with magical science fun! We explored John Zuman's fanstastic curriculum, MAGIC!. YES teens and families participated in a number of cool activities that explored the science behind those magic tricks we see in shows and on t.v. We are taking a break during May, but expect the next Family Science Night in June! Details are forthcoming! Hope to see you there (weather permitting, of course!).

City Science YES teens worked with over 75 kids and their families at the Missouri Botanical Garden's Earth Day celebration. Teens demonstrated wind power and solar power by making windmills and solar powered sketch robots with visitors. Teens explained to kids and their families how solar panels work and why they are better for the environment. It was a great way for teens to conclude this semester, and gave them a chance to disseminate their STEM knowledge to other youth! Way to go City Science YES teens!

Increasing Parent Involvement, one meeting at a time!

Last Saturday YES held its first ever Parent Orientation. This event gave parents a chance to explore the Taylor Building (thanks to our very own YES teens who provided the tour), as well as an on-line tour of the YES program (thanks Cindy!). This was also a great opportunity for parents to meet one another, as well as YES staff. Although attendance was low, the parents who came to the orientation were eager to learn the "in's and out's" of the YES program. Thanks to all who helped put this event together. Hopefully we gained a whole ne

YES Parents as Parenters Meeting 4

I want to thank the parents who attended the 4th YPP meeting this past Saturday. I am overwhelmed with the amount of thoughtfulness and support that YES parents demonstrate within these meetings. Some of the most fantastic ideas have sprung from these meetings, and I am convinced that without a parent advisory board and support from YES parents, the YES program would not reach the heights that it is reaching today. Many new and exciting ideas came out of this last meeting, including a Finance Workshop for teens (how to spend and save wisely), which will be lead by one of our

City Science Update: Creating Environmental Stewards

I have to take a moment to brag about the amount of thought, time, and effort a majority of City Science teens have put forth in both the Green Team Challenge as well as their Instruction Manuals. All of the teens seem to understand the importance and value of renewable engery, recycling, and more important, documenting their learning experience so they can pass the torch on to others within the community. Last week we briefly touched on being "stewards" of their environment, and what that meant (as mentioned in the Omnimax film, "Hurricane on the Bayou").&

This past Saturday we held our third YPP meeting. Although we had a small turn out, it was a valuable and productive meeting. Tim, a graduate intern from SLU, met with the parents to discuss his series of College Worksops that he has organized for YES teens and families. A few of the other topics we discussed were increasing parent involvement in the YES program, as well as creating a mentoring opportunity for older YES teens who can help acclimate new YES teens into the program. Great ideas came out of this meeting...I thank each of the parents who participat
